The Fox Glacier South Side Walkway is just over 4 miles. Including stops to admire the views, I recommend setting aside around an hour and a half for this hike.

What is the route?

This is an out-and-back hike. It traces the Fox River and takes you mainly through woodland. There are various viewpoints along the way where you can see Fox Glacier. You’ll get the best view of the glacier at the top, where you’re facing it directly. Then you’ll simply retrace your steps on the way back.

The route is easy to follow as there’s a clear path the whole way. It’s also a fairly popular hike so, if in doubt, just follow everyone else!

How difficult is the hike?

The Fox Glacier South Side Walkway is a relatively easy hike. It’s broadly uphill on the way out but there is only one short steep section through a section of rainforest. The path is wide and well-maintained, with mostly gravel underfoot.

What should you wear for the hike?

You don’t need to wear sports gear for this hike. Just wear something comfortable.

In terms of footwear, walking boots aren’t necessary unless it’s wet. I would recommend wearing trainers, although if you only have sandals then you should be fine.

What I loved about this hike

This hike has it all: not too long, not too difficult, but providing incredible views. It’s amazing seeing a glacier so clearly, especially when you’re not tired out from hiking up a hill for the view! And, if it’s a hot day, the woodland setting of the hike will shade you from the sun. All in all I think it’s a perfect hike.

If you’re staying in Fox Glacier, make sure you check out Lake Matheson just a few miles the other side of the town. You can do an easy circular walk around Lake Matheson and, on a clear day, you’ll get impressive views of Mount Cook.

For a harder hike, head 20 miles up the road to Franz Josef and do the 10-mile Alex Knob Track. You’ll get views over the mountains all the way out to the coast and, at the top, a stellar view of the Franz Josef Glacier.
